Alabama Homecoming Shooting: Tuskegee University Says One Dead, More Injured

A shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama during a homecoming celebration on Sunday resulted in the death of an individual and more injuries, the university said.
Several students have been taken to local hospitals to receive treatment, a spokesperson for Tuskegee University told Newsweek.
Special agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are still gathering and reviewing information related to the events that led to the shooting.
At this time, authorities report that no arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said in a statement: “On Sunday, November 10, at the request of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, special agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation launched an investigation into a shooting investigation.
“At approximately 1:40 a.m., special agents received notification of multiple individuals shot on the campus of Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, located within Macon County. Multiple individuals have been transported to area hospitals for treatment and one individual has been confirmed deceased.
“Special agents are still in the process of gathering and examining information relative to the sequence of events which ultimately led to the shooting. The scene has now been secured by several law enforcement agencies.”
Police responded to reports of gunshots fired at 1200 West Montgomery Road, located in the West Commons apartment complex near the school, according to the New York Post.
Footage posted on social media appears to show several gunshots fired and students fleeing the scene.
Another video shared on X, formerly Twitter, shows people crouching behind a car as what appear to be gunshots can be heard rapidly ringing out.
The university told Newsweek: “Tuskegee University confirms that a shooting occurred on campus early Sunday morning, November 10, resulting in the death of a non-university individual.
“The parents of this individual have been notified. Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.”
The university said, “Emergency responders, along with campus and local law enforcement, have secured the scene. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is conducting an active investigation.”
The statement continued, “The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
According to the university’s website, Tuskegee celebrated its 100th homecoming this weekend.
Tuskegee University is historically a Black university. It was founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington with the mission of providing higher education to African Americans, particularly in the South.
Last year, four people were injured when a shooting broke out at an “unauthorized party,” at the West Commons student housing complex, prompting school officials to cancel classes, according to a local NBC affiliate.
New data shows September was the worst month for deaths and injuries from shootings at K-12 schools in the past decade.
The School Shooting Data and Analysis report, written by David Riedman of the K-12 School Shooting Database, reveals that September 2024 saw eight people killed, and 38 people injured from school shootings, higher than any previous September—typically the first month of school after the summer break—since 2014.
